Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the Canadian studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, ending 31 years of story led role playing games and halting the next Mass Effect title. BioWare confirmed the shutdown in an official statement, and the unannounced project, still in early development, goes with it.

BioWare closes after three decades of role playing history
Founded in Canada in 1995, BioWare built its name on branching stories, complicated companions and choices carried between games. Its catalogue runs from Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, then Mass Effect and Dragon Age. EA bought the studio in 2007.
The last decade was harder. Mass Effect: Andromeda arrived in 2017, Anthem in 2019, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 without the sales EA expected, leaving the studio under growing pressure.
About 400 EA roles go as the slate narrows
The closure sits inside a wider reorganisation. According to published reports, EA plans to cut about 400 jobs, roughly 3 percent of its workforce, around 50 of them at BioWare. The company says it will help affected staff look for other roles inside the business.
EA now steers investment toward fewer, larger projects. Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain in the pipeline, while the future of Mass Effect itself is unclear.
